In our everyday life, we are all likely to provide some sort of service to someone and/or receive one from someone else. Exchange of service may take place between two people, two groups of people or two organisations and so on. Specially when we tak about IT Services
But what is a IT service and what is it all about?
An IT service is a way the IT service provider delivers a value to the customers by helping and supporting them to concentrate on successfully doing their own business and achieving their own business goals while service provider takes care of the issues and costs which are arising in provision of a service to a customer.
Ultimately, a IT service is about creating a value for a customer. Customer’s perspective of the value is in what customer receives and how it is provided.
IT Service management is, therefore, a set of specialised organizational capabilities for providing a value to customers in a form of services.
An IT department or an IT organisation provides the IT services to other business groups, departments or organisations within or without IT parent organisation.
An IT service is based on use of Information Technology and supports customer’s business processes. IT is made up from combination of people, processes and technology.
IT service management is, therefore, concerned with the implementation and management of quality IT services that meet needs of the business.
ITIL (Information Technology Infrastructure Library) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. ITIL represents one of best management practices owned by British Government.
ISO/IEC 20000 is the first international standard for IT service management. It was originally developed to reflect best practice guidance contained within the ITIL framework but now it supports other IT service management frameworks and approaches including Microsoft Operations Framework and components of ISACA's COBIT framework.
